JanitorAI alternatives: a test drive of the options

If JanitorAI keeps forgetting your story, muting you without a reason, or throwing proxy errors, there are other places to take your characters. Below are seven alternatives, from paid companion sites with longer memory to SpicyChat, a free-first option that works much like JanitorAI. This is a test drive: I read the official pages and free-plan details, all checked on Oct 25, 2026. I did not pay for any of them.

Why people look for alternatives

JanitorAI is free to use and its built-in model, JLLM, costs nothing. That is the main reason people stay. The reasons people leave come up again and again.

• Bans and mutes without a clear reason. Reviewers on Trustpilot describe automated mutes and bans with unclear explanations and slow support. That profile had a 2.5/5 rating from 35 reviews when I checked on Oct 25, 2026, so it is a small sample.
• Short memory on the free tier. JanitorAI’s help centre lists a free context limit of about 9k tokens. Past that, the bot starts losing earlier parts of the chat. Janitor+ gives five times the context, at $12.99 a month on the US App Store (the web price is not published).
• Proxy setup is fiddly. Stronger models mean connecting an external API key or proxy, such as OpenRouter. JanitorAI’s own help pages list a long run of possible errors: rate limits, 401s, 403s, 502s and provider outages.
• Quality and feature changes. Reviewers mention repetitive or out-of-character replies, quality drops after model changes, removed features and chats being cut off.

If your main problem is the proxy, a paid site with its own models removes that step. If your main problem is cost, the honest answer is that very few sites beat free.

The alternatives

CrushOn.AI

CrushOn.AI is the closest paid match to JanitorAI: user-created characters, character chat and group chat. The free plan lists 100 message credits a month and 8K memory, and paid plans go to 16K or 24K memory. Standard costs $5.99 a month or $58.88 a year, as listed on the official pricing page on Oct 25, 2026.

Watch two things. Free-tier chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. Trustpilot reviewers (22 reviews, 1.8/5 at check) say turning on 18+ content required a $0.99 card charge. The site’s terms do not describe this.

GirlfriendGPT

GirlfriendGPT pairs community-made characters with a character builder, plus image and video generation. Higher tiers add longer memory and voice. The homepage FAQ lists plans from $5 a month, but the plan names in that FAQ do not match the plan screen, so treat the price as possibly out of date. The free tier is described as about 20 messages.

Secrets AI

Secrets AI publishes its limits plainly, which is rarer than it should be. The free tier allows 20 messages a day with basic memory. Premium adds unlimited messages, lorebooks and enhanced memory for $19.99 a month or $109.99 a year, per the official wiki on Oct 25, 2026. Lorebooks and personas will feel familiar if you build characters on JanitorAI.

OurDream AI

OurDream AI is a companion site with memory, group chats, a community feed and image, video and voice. It is not a free option in practice. Free users pay 1 dreamcoin per message, and free coins come only from referrals, contests and Discord events. Subscribers chat on standard models at no coin cost, for $19.99 a month or $119.88 a year, per the official help centre on Oct 25, 2026.

Dream Companion

Dream Companion offers more than 10,000 premade companions plus a custom builder, with in-chat images and voice. Its homepage says it does not currently use your chats to train its own models, which few sites on this list say. Free users get one character and a limited number of messages, “typically between 10 to 20” per its terms.

Nectar AI focuses on roleplay, with customisable characters and storyline “Fantasies”. The free plan includes the character creator, chat and some image generations. I could not record prices: the pricing page sits behind a login and Nectar’s own blog posts give conflicting figures.

SpicyChat (free option)

SpicyChat is the one to try first if free is the point. Like JanitorAI, it is built around a library of user-made characters, with group chat, lorebooks and character import. The free tier has a smaller context than JanitorAI’s (4,096 tokens) and shows ads. Paid tiers start at $5.95 a month, after a price rise on Sep 8, 2026. It does not pay me anything; I list it because it fits Janitor users better than most paid sites.

How to pick

Start with the problem that pushed you off JanitorAI.

• You want free and nothing else. Try SpicyChat. Expect a shorter memory than JanitorAI’s free tier, and ads.
• You are tired of proxies and want longer memory for little money. CrushOn.AI’s Standard plan lists 16K memory for $5.99 a month. Read its free-history and age-check notes first.
• You want clear, published limits. Secrets AI states its free and paid allowances on its wiki.
• Privacy matters most. Dream Companion says it does not train its own models on chats. Secrets AI and OurDream AI offer self-service account deletion. CrushOn.AI’s policy says chat content is used for training “in a general way”.

A note on Chub AI. Many JanitorAI users move there because chat is free if you bring your own API key. I am not recommending it: its terms only say real photos of real people are “frowned upon” and removed if illegal, which falls short of a clear rule against deepfakes. Its subscription is also crypto-only.

Whichever you pick, test the free tier before paying. Most of these sites say refunds are rare or discretionary.
