Test drive, not a crash test. Built from the free plan details and the official prices and policies. The score here is a paper score; a paid crash test replaces it.

Good on paper

  • Prices public: Janitor+ prices published
  • Free plan or trial: Free tier with standard models
  • Real-person ban: Bans real private people and deepfakes
  • Self-serve deletion: Settings > Security > Delete account
  • Refund policy published: Refund terms published
  • No unresolved breach: None reported

Watch out for

  • Chat data explained: Chat data policy not available

JanitorAI is a character chat site where you talk to characters other users have built. Chatting is free on the built-in JanitorLLM model, and a Janitor+ subscription mainly buys more memory. This is a test drive: I read the official help center and app listings on Oct 25, 2026, and did not pay for anything.

What it is

JanitorAI calls itself a character chat and interactive-fiction platform. Users create characters, and you chat with them using either the built-in model, JanitorLLM (JLLM), or an outside model you connect with your own proxy and API key.

The company listed on the App Store is JanitorAI, Inc. Its country or jurisdiction is not published on the pages checked. It runs on the web, iOS and Android, according to the official help center.

Free plan

JanitorAI has a real free tier. As described in the official subscription FAQ on Oct 25, 2026:

  • Unlimited chats on the standard chat models
  • A context limit of about 9k tokens, which is how much of the conversation the bot can “remember” at once
  • JLLM is free and built in
  • JanitorAI states that free access will remain available

The context limit is the catch. Once a chat runs past it, earlier details start to fall out of the bot’s memory. That is not a bug, just arithmetic.

Prices

Only the iOS in-app prices are verified. The web (Stripe) price for Janitor+ was not found on an official page.

PlanPriceBillingWhat you get
Free$0n/aUnlimited chats, standard models, ~9k token context
Janitor+ Monthly (iOS)$12.99Monthly5x more context, priority access, monthly swipes with best models, golden username/checkmark, comment react emojis
Janitor+ Annual (iOS)$99.00YearlySame as Janitor+

There is also the janitor+ Router, for subscribers on the web only. It gives pay-per-token access to third-party models without setting up your own proxy. Per the official help article on Oct 25, 2026, there is no separate Router fee, select models are 10% off, new subscribers can claim a $1 launch credit (it expires a year after claiming), and credits are non-refundable.

Payment notes from the help center: web payments go through Stripe and JanitorAI says it does not store card details. App subscriptions are billed by the App Store or Google Play and cannot be cancelled from the web. Payments are generally non-refundable.

Features

From the official help center, as checked on Oct 25, 2026:

  • JLLM: the free built-in model, used by default unless you connect an external API
  • Bring your own model: connect any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, such as OpenRouter, with your own API key
  • Character tools: a character creation page, personas, scripts and custom CSS
  • Content setting: a Limited vs Limitless setting; the NSFW toggle for the app is set on the website

The bring-your-own-model option is the reason a lot of people use JanitorAI. It is also the reason a lot of people end up searching for error codes. If that is you, see why JanitorAI is not working. Costs and logging for outside models depend on the provider you connect, not on JanitorAI.

Privacy and safety

Age checks. The App Store rating is 18+. For IP addresses in Australia and Brazil (from Apr 24, 2026) and the UK (from Jun 15, 2026), JanitorAI uses a one-time age check through k-ID: facial age estimation, an ID scan or AgeKey. JanitorAI says it receives only a pass or fail result. The method for other countries is not stated on official pages.

Chat data. How JanitorAI uses chat data, including model training and staff access, is not published on the pages I could check. The terms and privacy pages did not load for the research tools, so treat this as unknown rather than as good or bad.

Deletion. You can delete your account yourself: Settings > Security > Delete account, confirmed with a 6-digit code sent by email. It is permanent. The help center says posts, characters, personas and your profile are removed; chats are not explicitly mentioned. Support cannot delete accounts for you.

Content rules. JanitorAI does not allow content that depicts or recreates real private individuals, including AI likenesses and deepfakes of identifiable people. Widely recognized celebrities may be depicted. Content creators, influencers, streamers and sex workers may not be depicted in any way.

What users complain about

JanitorAI had a Trustpilot rating of 2.5/5 from 35 reviews at the time of checking. That is a small sample for a site this size, so read it as a list of themes, not a verdict. Reviewers mention:

  • Automated mutes and bans with unclear reasons, and slow support
  • Repetitive or out-of-character replies, and quality drops after model changes
  • Removed features, chats cut off and tags not loading

Reddit complaints were not collected.

My take

On paper, JanitorAI is one of the more generous free options: unlimited chats on a free model is not something many services offer. It might suit you if you like browsing user-made characters and do not mind tinkering with an API key to get a stronger model.

What to watch: the ~9k token context on the free tier, the extra setup and third-party costs if you bring your own model, and moderation complaints from reviewers. The web price for Janitor+ and the chat data policy were not published where I looked.

If it is not the right fit, I keep a list of JanitorAI alternatives.

FAQ

It has an 18+ rating, age checks in Australia, Brazil and the UK, self-serve account deletion and a rule against deepfakes of identifiable people. Its chat data policy was not available to check. The full breakdown is in is JanitorAI safe.

If you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, cancel through the App Store or Google Play; the help center says app subscriptions cannot be cancelled from the web.

Paper check: 7.5/10

Ten yes/no checks against the official pages, checked Oct 25, 2026. Half a point when the answer is unclear. A paid crash test replaces this score. How the paper score works.
