How we test

We use two formats: paid tests and overviews. Each page says which one it is.

We pick paid tests by reader interest. A test drive becomes a crash test as soon as we run one, and the page says when that happened.

The paper score

Before we pay, every service gets ten yes/no checks against its own official pages. Each yes is worth 1 point, an unclear or partial answer 0.5, a no or “not published” 0. Every check, with its answer, is listed on the review.

  1. Company named: legal entity and country in the terms.
  2. Prices public: plans and prices visible before you sign up.
  3. Renewal terms clear: how and when the plan renews.
  4. Free plan or trial: you can try before paying.
  5. Real age check: more than a single “I’m 18” checkbox.
  6. Real-person ban: a written rule against sexual content of real people and deepfakes.
  7. Self-serve deletion: you can delete your account and chats yourself.
  8. Chat data explained: the policy says whether chats train the AI.
  9. Refund policy published.
  10. No unresolved breach: no publicly reported data breach left unexplained.

The paper score tells you how open and careful a service is on paper. It says nothing about how good the chats or images are; only a crash test can, and its score replaces the paper score.

The six steps of a paid test

  1. Sign up with a new email. We note what the site asks for and whether it checks age.
  2. Use the free plan, if there is one, until we hit its limits.
  3. Pay for the cheapest plan with our own card. We save the checkout and the statement line.
  4. Use it for at least 7 days: AI sites daily, VR sites on a Quest and in a browser.
  5. Check privacy: read the policy, request data export or deletion, time the reply.
  6. Cancel and time it from login to confirmation. Then we watch the next statement.

The score

The total is the weighted average of the four parts, out of 10. A site that hides its company, has no working cancellation or skips age checks is not listed, whatever else it does well.

Updates

We re-test every listed site at least every six months, after a price change, and when readers report a problem. Each review shows the test dates and a test ID such as CTL-0012.

Money

We pay for subscriptions ourselves. Some links earn us a commission. That money pays for the tests and never changes a score. See our advertising disclosure.
